Hello Golfers,

Jon Rahm held his nerve in a dramatic finish at the Jumeirah Golf Estates to win the DP World Tour Championship and, perhaps more importantly, the Race to Dubai.

Rahm was one of five contenders for the European Tour’s season-long prize and despite being locked on 18-under with clubhouse leader Tommy Fleetwood going down the last, the Spaniard produced a sublime greenside bunker shot to set-up a four-foot birdie putt, which he duly rolled in to secure the honours.

 
 
Etiquette down to a tee

You already know the softer ground in winter makes it easier to take divots – especially on par-3s. With this in mind, it’s important to be aware of tee box etiquette when taking practice swings to help us keep the course in the best possible condition.

Taking a divot is easy to do if you’re not concentrating whilst eyeing up your tee shot. Unfortunately, at this time of the year, it can cause lasting damage to the turf.

When taking your pre-shot swings, make sure you step off to the side and find a section of longer grass away from the tee, which will let you brush the top without taking a nasty divot!

Trim the fat

In winter, the softer ground makes it far easier to fat a high lofted chip shot where your ball comes to rest about two feet in front of your toes – not ideal. But there is another way, with the bump and run shot being a great alternative if you’re in the enviable position of having a clear run to the green.

The key to playing a bump and run is to set up with a narrow stance and your weight slightly favouring your front foot.

During the stroke – a bit like a putt – keep your weight stable and don't hinge your wrists to ensure solid contact with the ball.

We recommend playing this shot with an 8 or 7-iron, which means you need to land the ball 25% of the way to the hole so it runs out the remainder.

Just remember to allow for the contours of the green as your ball will behave like a putt for the second part of its journey.
